Standard Symbology
for Physical Distribution

There are some types of physical distribution (PD):
  1. Supplying Distribution : from supply to stock
  2. Sales Distribution : concerning with sales of products
  3. Inhouse Distribution, Returning Distribution
Here, we deal with the supplying distribution, from manufacture to stock.

The method to manage these physical distribution is called Logistics (= originally means the military supply). Logistics aims at rationalization of physical distribution.

Rationalization of Distribution means, elimination of surplus stocks, in the each step of the following flow: Manufacturer and Dealer --> Physical Distribution Center --> Retail Shop. At the same time, logistics establishes readiness for instant delivery of necessary products.

The adoption of on-line and network system of Information in recent years, connecting the retail shop from the maker, enables the both contrary demands without contradiction.

The following illustration shows the flow of informations and products.

In this flow, Standard Symbology for Physical Distribution printed onto concentrated packaging (Cardboard case, etc.) enable the computer systems to recognize the information of products automatically.

* Coding System of the Standard Symbology for Physical Distribution

The coding system of the Standard Symbology for Physical Distribution consists of 1 (or 2) digit(s) of Identification Code for Physical Distribution (LV = Logistics Value) affixed before JAN code of the content product.
There are two variation of LVs, 1-digit (Standard Version = International standard) and 2-digit (Extended Version = for domestic use in Japan only).

* Barcodes used for the Standard Symbology for Physical Distribution

For printing the Standard Symbology for Physical Distribution, we usually use the binary-level barcode, Interleaved 2 of 5 (ITF), because it is easy to read in the rough condition like the flexo printing. That's why it is generally called ITF, from the abbreviation of Interleaved Two of Five.

The code of ITF must have even length of figures. So the Extended Version of 15-digit (odd length) must affix a dummy zero at the beginning and fit its length to 16 (even) digits.
