Add-on Version

6-digit symbol, appended after the symbol of UCC case code, or Standard Symbology for Physical Distribution, and indicates the weight of content.

A. I.

<Application Identitier>

A.I. is a code used for indicating the type of the subsequent content.

In the supplementary code of UCC/EAN-128, with the various combinations, A.I. represent many information about contents of package.

EAN-128 is usually used in combination with the UPC CASECODE. It can be used alone in case of standard carton ID.

As of 1996, A.I. is defined as below:

* Standard Carton ID

00 + n18
** 00 indicates A.I; n18 indicates that 18 data digits come after A.I.
** If data is alphanumeric, use an_XX in place of n_XX.
** eg.) 20 data digits or less : n_20 (or an_20).
(and so forth)
A.I.00 is also called a serial code for shipment packaging; this code itself functions independently, without supplementing the other.
Adopted SSCC (Serial Shipping Conttainer Code) defined by VICS (Voluntary Interindustry Communications Standards) in 1988.
A digit which follows A.I.indicates the type of packing type. See the codes and packing type table below:
0 : case or carton
1 : pallet
2 : container
3 : packing type other than those above
4 : internal (intra-company) use
5 : according to inter-company rules
6-9 : reserved
Subsequent 7 digits are EAN flag and maker code; then the next 9 digits are serial number of shipment packing at last the check-digit (modulus 10).
In clothing industry where there are a number of combined shipments, it is used in coordination with prior shipment detail notification system, like the password authentication.

* Shipping Container Code

01 + n14
The shipping container code consists of A.I, packaging type code (1-digit), EAN code (12-digit) and its checkdigit.
These 14 digits can be followed by several type of supplementary code except quantity.

02 + n14
Among the shipping container code, A.I. 02 is used for things with A.I. 37 (quantity).

* Batch/Lot Number

10 + an_20
Mainly defined by Maker for inter-company tracking/distinguishing, by 20-digit (or less) alphanumerics: trackable lot number, batch number, processing number, etc.
** if the data length is variable, insert FNC.1 (as a separator) between the end of data and the next A.I.

* Dates

11 + n6 = date of manufacture
13 + n6 = date of packing
15 + n6 = sell-by date (recommended, quality, best before, medicinal, etc.)
Data n6 is in YYMMDD (year, month, day) format. Set DD to 00 if the day is not needed.

* Renewed product

20 + n2
Used for the products when its package or its specification is renewed without changing the EAN code.

* Sequence Number

21 + an_20
Sequence number set by the maker of the product: serial number, track number, ID number for contact control, etc.
22 + an_29
used in accordance with the definition of HIBCC (Health Industry Business Communications Council).
(quantity, date, batch, link)
23L + an_19
Lot numbers in transitional use
** L is a number for indicating length of data; eg.) if data is 8 digit long, set L = 8
240 + an_30
code defined by maker for specifying the specification/volume/weight, etc. of the product.
241 + an_30
Product Item ID code defined by orderer
250 + an_30
Supplemental sequence number, computer-controlled serial number, etc. defined by maker for the whole lifecycle of the product.
